Liverpool Society of Chartered Accountants

Early booking recommended: CPD dates for your diary this autumn

By Chartered One

We’ve been busy!

I am delighted to report that LSCA’s very first joint collaboration with CIOT (Chartered Institute of Taxation) has now been confirmed! We will be welcoming Michael Sherry, Head of Temple Tax Chambers to talk to members about loan relationships. Virtually all corporate tax practitioners come across loan relationships on a regular basis and will be familiar with the numerous issues that arise whether with restructuring arrangements or in situations where related parties are involved. Moreover, we know it is an area where the government is consulting on changes.

This is an inaugural joint event with CIOT and we hope it is the first of many such collaborations, designed to bring to Liverpool, the very best topical speakers. A big thank you to Rob Adams, local CIOT chair, who has worked immensely hard to make this happen for us.

Join us at Rathbone Hall, Port of Liverpool Building on the afternoon of 21 October 2015, listen to, and meet, a highly commercial tax barrister and stimulating speaker, well known for his expert status in this area who also happens to be chartered accountant!

Our annual members conference takes a trusted formula and gives it a new twist

Collaboration is a big theme for 2015 and we have seized the opportunity to run our Annual Members Conference in unison with the ICAEW’s NW SME event. The NW SME conference has been held in Manchester in recent years but in joining forces with LSCA we have been able to create an offering that is Liverpool-centric but with appeal for members outside the city in both practice and business.

Our ‘One North’ conference will take place on 19th November. Amongst all this excitement you will also find the standard, timely updates on Financial Reporting, Personal & Corporate tax and Employment Law, perfect as your annual CPD fix on the things that matter in the year ahead.

And there’s even more...Topical Tuesdays in July, September, December

As this edition of CharteredOne goes to press we will be embarking on the first of a programme of events backed by CABA. Topical Tuesdays are a series of FREE workshops exclusively for ICAEW members which provide a bite-size magazine style mini conference. Each event will feature new content, following a set format:

  • Technical – high level content useful in your day job
  • Inspirational – hear the tales of others and understand their journey
  • Practical – soft skills training to help you balance your career and personal life
  • Social – network with your peers during drinks after the event.

July’s topics included PI risk management & work-life balance, September will cover Auto-enrolment & Building a Personal Brand while in December we’ll be delving into VAT Hot topics & Mindful Resilience.

You don’t need wait until September to start getting your head round Auto-enrolment. As we reach a critical stage as smaller businesses are brought into the regime this summer, it is anticipated that employers will be seeking help from their accountants. Check out the ICAEW’s dedicated AE page for help sheets, webinars and discussion forums:

And finally

In the midst of all this excitement, don’t forget to book your old favourites, the perennially popular updates: Financial Reporting on 15th October and Tax on 9th December.

All of these events can be booked via the ICAEW online events page or by emailing

Happy learning!
